About Frankie Manning
Frankie Manning (1914–2009) was a legendary American dancer, choreographer, and innovator of Lindy Hop, a swing dance that emerged in Harlem during the 1920s. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and raised in New York City. Since Manning was young, he often go to the famous Savoy Ballroom. Manning joined Whitey Lindy Hoppers, a famous group of Lindy Hop dancer and became a leading dancer, where he pioneered the use of aerials—spectacular, acrobatic moves that became a hallmark of Lindy Hop.
As a member of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, Manning performed internationally and appeared in films such as Hellzapoppin’ (1941). During World War II, everything changed politically and culturally. After World War II ends, Jazz and Lindy Hop lost its fame. So, to support his family, Manning stepped away from professional dancing, working at the U.S. Postal Service for three decades. However, in the 1980s, as interest in swing dancing reignited, Manning was sought out by younger dancers eager to learn from one of the original masters. He enthusiastically embraced this revival, traveling the world to teach and inspire a new generation of Lindy Hoppers.
"I'm not interested in fame and glory. It's just that I would like others to know what a happy dance this is"
- Frankie Manning -
Manning played a crucial role in reviving Lindy Hop, mentoring dancers, choreographing performances, and helping re-establish the dance as a global phenomenon. He received a Tony Award for his choreography in Black and Blue (1989) and was honored with a National Heritage Fellowship in 2000. His legacy continues to shape the swing dance community, and his birthday, May 26, is celebrated worldwide as World Lindy Hop Day.
